Rockets

A couple Sundays ago, we had a family dinner at our house.  My brother, Brian, and his family came down.  He has recently gotten into the rocket hobby.  He takes his boys out once a week and they shoot off rockets.  Brian brought along his collection and we went down to the end of our street to an empty lot and set them off.  It was REALLY fun.  The kids loved it and it also kept the adults plenty entertained.
The set up.
The kids were more than happy to run and retrieve the rocket parts that fell within two hundred yards all around us.  The parachutes did not work for the rockets so the pieces fell rapidly in all directions.  Brian jokingly asked if anyone wanted to go skydiving with him.  My Dad said not if Brian was packing the shoots.  Funny.

The crowds that gathered to watch.

AND AWAY!!

Happy kids with Rockets.

Our dear friend Luis Cuevas was on a business trip to Fredrick, MD and made the drive up for dinner with us.  He moved to our neighborhood in Oklahoma from Chile in 2002.  His wife and elementary/middle school aged children did not speak any English.  Dan and I really got to use our Spanish often.  Our families became very close.  The boys loved going to their house for noodle soup and banana milk.  Ximena, Luis's wife,  would watch MacGregor for me twice a week so I could go into the schools and tutor the native Spanish speakers.  There were quite a few migrant worker's children at the school as well.  We loved this family.  They moved to Washington State about a year and a half later.  Ainsley was only 5 months old and I was so sad that she wouldn't grow up with a memory of the Cuevas family.  Ximena LOVED baby Ainsley.
They have lived in WA for the last 5 years and this is the first time we have seen any of them in that time.  Their middle schooler leaves on his mission tomorrow.  Their elementary students are now 14 and 17.  Wow how time flies.    It was so fun to see Luis and I hope we can see them all again soon.

Wow! I-guy would have loved the rockets! He is always trying to build one and trying to figure out how to make one "really work" (I have banned batteries and fire). Lately he just asks me daily to buy one that will really work.
